Tesco’s Flour Masterclass

Posted on by John Spillings

Tesco_MasterclassLast month The Penny Bun Bakehouse was asked by Food Innovation Solutions Ltd to take part in a flour masterclass which was being held for Tesco at their head office in Chesthunt, Hartfordshire.

Two seminars took place over the course of the day, covering a wide range of topics including the flour journey, the science of flour for baking and global market trends. Johnny then talked about how he uses and selects his flour, bringing everything to life in the form of a visual demonstration and discussion about the variety of doughs that are used at The Bakehouse on a daily basis.

Other speakers included Laurie Pearson from Heygates Flour Mill, Celia Holt and Carlos Diaz from Food Innovation Solutions Ltd, and Dr Chris Brock, a scientist from Southbank University.

Tasters were available throughout the demonstrations and each attendee went home with a selection of five Bakehouse breads, covering a variety of styles from 100% Rye to a light Ciabatta.

Feedback was very positive and the day was very successful and enjoyed by all.

Showcasing at Halesworth Produce Market

Posted on by John Spillings

Our first appearance at a Farmers’ market was a huge success so thanks to everyone that came down to support us in Halesworth this weekend. We showcased a large selection of our artisan breads including North Sea Sourdough, 100% Rye, Wholemeal Spelt and English Muffins. Our handmade Spiced Orange and Blackcurrent Truffles were also very popular as well as our Belgian Chocolate Mice which make great stocking fillers.

Since setting up the Bakehouse in 2010 we have primarily been operating as a wholesale bakery, supplying local hotels, restaurants and deli’s, therefore its great to have the opportunity to sell our baked goods and chocolates directly to the public.

Halesworth Produce Market takes place at the Old Print Works on the 2nd Saturday of the month 0900-1300. The next one is in February so we look forward to seeing you there.

Spring’s festive celebrations – Bakehouse style

Posted on by John Spillings

PARTY4We really enjoyed hosting Spring’s Christmas party in the Bakehouse this week. Guests were able to personalise and bake their own baguette to take home and we ensured it was a festive feast to remember!

Appetisers included Bakehouse smoked salmon, horseradish & fennel sliders, Jerusalem artichoke & truffle soup and mustard & cheddar cheese straws. A roasted rib of beef from Clarke’s of Bramfield was served up for main course with all the trimmings followed by a local apple & cinnamon pre-dessert. The feast finished with a trio of Christmas desserts, coffee and blackcurrent truffles.

The night flowed well into the early hours with plenty of bubbles, dancing and festive cheer.

Baked goods for Breakthrough Breast Cancer

Posted on by John Spillings

Beccles-and-BungayWe were really happy to support Team Robertson on their sponsored walk last month to raise money for the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Charity. The Bakehouse provided the team with cakes and biscuits for their picnic lunch including scones, vanilla sables, seed slice and chocolate brownies. We even got a mention in the Beccles & Bungay Journal!

Many other local businesses such as Aspall Cyder and Kettle Foods supported the event which was a huge success – raising over £2000 for the charity.

Last year the team took on the challenge of trekking the Great Wall of China and this month they are planning to cycle from Vietnam to Cambodia, all in support of Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Team Robertson can be sponsored at and we wish them the best of luck.

Afternoon Tea at The Bakehouse

Posted on by John Spillings

Afternoon Tea

This Mother’s Day we hosted Afternoon Tea at The Bakehouse to a full house of 40 guests. Each were served a cocktail to start the afternoon off, followed by two savoury and two sweet courses, alongside a selection of teas.

Being the first event, of course there were a few hitches and creases to iron out but the whole team pulled together and made the day a great success. We’ve had a lot of great feedback and look forward to hosting our next event soon. Thanks to everyone who came and that worked so hard to make it a success.
